MANCHESTER FOOD RESEARCH CENTRE

Christopher Smith - Director of MFRC

Chris joined MMU in November 2010 as the Director of the Manchester Food Research Centre and Professor of Food Science at Hollings Faculty. Educated in Liverpool, Chris took a first degree in Applied Biology followed by a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Salford. He then moved with his research team to the North East Wales Institute to establish the Multidisciplinary Research Centre in the new Glyndwr University. Starting as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist he was eventually promoted to Head of Department before leaving in 1993 having been head hunted by Industry. During his time at Glyndwr (NEWI) he undertook a wide range of research in both Medical Diagnostics and Food analysis and it was during this period he was associated with the development of the immunoassay systems used for rapid meat speciation and contaminant detection in foods. This work resulted in the establishment of Biokits, a small company producing immunoassays for the food industry. The products, despite changes of ownership, are still in production. Chris moved to the Pharmaceutical industry where he continued his work on diagnostics using immunoassay technologies although he was also acting as a consultant within the company on the development of novel rapid food analysis products. During this period he developed the rapid medical diagnostic test for Helicobacter pylori. Promotion to Principal Scientist lead to the leadership of a large team isolating microbial antigens for disease diagnosis. When the company was taken over Chris moved to the post of Intellectual Property Manager, controlling the IP of the Provalis group for several years and acquiring knowledge of Patent Law and IP Management.  He moved to become Operations Director of a small start-up company, BioPhacillities in 2002. When BioPhacillities was taken over by NCIMB based in Aberdeen he decided to accept an invitation to return to Academia and became a Senior Lecturer at Chester University College. In 2004 he was appointed Editor-in-Chief of Food and Agricultural Immunology and later the same year, Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Food Science and Technology. When Chester achieved full University status he was appointed Professor of Biotechnology and then Professor of Food Science. Chris has published over 100 scientific papers, many in the field of Food Science; he has provided chapters for books and spoken at over 150 scientific meetings.Click here to download a list of Chris's recent publications and conference presentations. Since 1991 he has organised the biannual conference, International conference on AgriFood Antibodies. He has also been instrumental in organising the biannual Environment and Food Mass Spectrometry Special Interest Group meetings as well as the 2008 IFST Annual Meeting, the First International Chester Food Science and Technology Conference and the Food Nanotechnology Conference.
